Something Old, Something New for Shanks Waste Plant

Take one outdated waste management site, replace it with a state of the art recycling facility complete with purpose-built substation, and what do you get? Greatly enhanced capacity, capable of processing 150,000 tonnes of waste and recyclables every year.

The Challenge

As part of an ongoing commitment to reduce the amount of waste materials being sent to landfill, our client Shanks sought to replace its existing mixed-use site at Blochairn Road, Glasgow with a new state of the art recycling plant. The vision – a 3000m2 dedicated facility capable of processing material from Shanks’ municipal, commercial and industrial customers, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Efficiency of space was a key consideration, as was ensuring a robust energy supply, prompting main contractor Luddon to commission Energetics to custom-design and build a new substation to Shanks’ exact needs.

The Solution

Our solution – a 850kVA LV supply, single close-coupled substation – was designed to be as compact as it was powerful, meeting the high demands of the recycling plant whilst maximising the footprint available for recycling activities and enabling Shanks to realise its target of processing 150,000 tonnes of waste and recyclables per year. And with our dedicated project management and operations team, the project was delivered safely and connected on time.
