New Street, New Approach in Birmingham

One of the UK’s busiest train stations situated in a heavily congested part of Birmingham and subject to rigorous quality and safety practices – just a few of the challenges that the new high voltage energy supply for New Street Station presented, but nothing that Energetics’ innovative, integrated approach to utility services provision couldn’t handle.

The Challenge

Carrying over 140,000 passengers daily, more than double the capacity it was built for, there was little doubt over demand for the £600 million redevelopment of New Street Station. Less obvious was how to deliver the HV energy supply amidst such a congested urban environment with numerous stakeholders including shop keepers, local councils and the general public. Another major challenge was combining health and safety regulations from both industries ensuring that the project was delivered safely.

The Solution

Drawing on our wealth of electrical engineering expertise, including our successful cable work for MediaCityUK in Salford, we identified an alternative route enabling 3km of cable to be laid throughout the city centre with minimum upheaval. We also custom-designed two compact HV switchrooms, providing greater resilience without eating into prime retail space.

And because we believe in adding value at every stage of the process, we tailored our financial terms to offer a more commercially attractive arrangement. All of which combined provided main contractors MACE and customer Network Rail with the flexible approach they were looking for, whilst still complying with the rigorous quality and safety regulations governing both sectors.
